The Schellbruch is an important nature reserve in Lübeck on the course of the lower Trave near Gothmund . In § 2 of the Nature Conservation Ordinance, it says: "The nature reserve serves to preserve a landscape that is characterized by brackish water lagoons, fresh water and meadows and fractures influenced by these, with numerous and species-rich, sometimes rare and endangered flora and fauna."
It consists of the Great Lagoon and the Gothmund Lagoon , which are separated from it by the Treidelstieg along the Trave. However, there is an exchange with the brackish water area of the Trave via outlets . The Medebek flows into the Great Lagoon from Lübeck's Lauerholz municipal forest . The Schellbruch is next to the Dassower See the most important bird sanctuary in Lübeck.
The Schellbruch has been under protection since 1983. In the 1970s, the approximately 30 hectare site was to be flushed in order to gain additional space for the operation of the Lübeck port. Citizens of Lübeck, supported by the mayor at the time, Robert Knüppel , turned against this.
