Gustav-Robert Knüppel (born March 27, 1931 in Kiel ) is a German politician (CDU) . From 1976 to 1988 he was mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck and general secretary of the German Foundation for Monument Protection until the end of 2008 , after which he was a member of the foundation's board of directors, from which he moved as deputy chairman to the board of trustees in early 2011.

Life

Robert Knüppel was born in Kiel. After graduating from the Kiel School of Academics , he studied economics and received his doctorate at the age of 25. He first worked at the State Statistical Office in Kiel and then went to Lübeck, where in 1960 he took over the management of the Office for Elections and Statistics. In 1968 he became the Hanseatic City's Senator for Finance. In 1976 he replaced Werner Kock (SPD) as the mayor of Lübeck as a candidate for the CDU and became head of the city administration. During his tenure Lübeck in 1987 in the World Heritage List of UNESCO received what he played a major role. He was succeeded as mayor in 1988 by Michael Bouteiller (SPD). In 1992 Robert Knüppel became the managing director of the German Foundation for Monument Protection , later its general secretary. From 1994 to 1999 he was also chairman of the Possehl Foundation , of which he was a board member for 26 years. In 2002 the city of Lübeck awarded him its highest honor, the Bene Merenti medal . In 2006 he received the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
