The Possehl Foundation in Lübeck emerged from the estate of the businessman Emil Possehl , who bequeathed his fortune to the city of Lübeck in a will on November 29, 1915 with the condition that it would promote public welfare, the German patriotic spirit and the youth. To this end, it happened as has in his will by Possehl, establishing the foundation . On the occasion of its 100th anniversary, the foundation was awarded the highest award of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, the commemorative coin Bene Merenti , in 2019 for its "extraordinary services to the community of the city", according to Mayor Jan Lindenau (SPD) .

Purposes of the foundation

The charitable purposes and goals of the Possehl Foundation are set out in the statutes as follows:

  • Beautification of the city of Lübeck and its public facilities
  • Support of non-profit municipal institutions, in particular those that are dedicated to promoting young people
  • Promotion of art and science
  • Promotion of trade, shipping, industry and trade to train young people
  • Promotion of welfare, especially for war invalids and survivors

The goals of the foundation have remained essentially unchanged to this day , taking into account the current criteria for charitable status.

The foundation is the sole shareholder of the Lübeck trading company Possehl .

So far, probably the greatest sponsorship gift to the city of Lübeck has been the St. Anne's art gallery as an extension to the St. Anne's monastery , including the remaining structure of the former St. Anne's church. The foundation runs the European Hanseatic Museum and the Lübeck Theater Figure Museum as its own projects .

Since January 2016 the entrepreneur Max Schön has been the chairman of the foundation's board of directors, succeeding the pharmacist Renate Menken .
