action

Constance Piponnier suffers from massive test anxiety. She has already failed the driving test five times and fails every other test. Against the wishes of her father, who runs a vegetable stand in Orleans, she moves to Paris to find happiness there.

She has little money and moves in as a lodger with Monsieur Henri while she studies at the University of Paris. The odd pensioner Henri has lived alone with his turtle in an old Parisian apartment since the death of his wife. He has become bitter and grumpy after the death of his wife, who died under the influence of alcohol 30 years ago after falling out of a window. His son Paul hopes that a young roommate can take care of him.

The chaotic and always burned down Constance does not stick to Henri's rules, so she secretly plays the piano (a passion she had given up because of her father), although Henri had forbidden her, and sometimes uses his slippers. When she can no longer pay her rent, Henri proposes a deal: she should divide Paul from his wife Valerie, and in return she should stay at home.

Desperate, Constance accepts the immoral offer. At a brunch she meets Paul and his wife Valerie and she begins to flirt with Paul in moments that his wife does not observe. But later she also befriends Valerie, who helps her when she fails another exam. Henri's heart also softens Constance, and he suggests that she apply to the London School of Music. But he also reminds her of her deal.

And so Constance Paul continues to make advances, which he also falls for. He falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Constance has a fleeting affair with a DJ. Paul misinterprets the signs and accompanies Constance to a club. The two kiss when he sets them down at home, Constance fends off further advances.

Then there is an argument between Paul and Valerie. When Paul then throws himself into his supposed affair, Constance tells him that nothing will come of it. There is a reconciliation with Valerie, who has revealed to Paul that she is pregnant. Henri is now expecting a grandchild. Paul finally makes up with Constance too.

Constance realizes that Henri treats his son as her father treats her. Both fathers believe they know what is best for their children. She makes up her own mind and decides to concentrate on what she wants: to write music. Against her father's wishes, she went to London and took part in an audition there in the hope of being accepted into composition studies. In the meantime, Henri dies and she returns to Paris. There Paul reveals to her that Henri died happily and that he was very happy to have the grandchild. He also tells her that he was very happy that Constance was successful in auditioning. Constance now admits that she was not taken in the finals, but that she did not want to write to him due to his health. She wants to try again next year. Paul says that she can live in Henri's apartment and gives her a farewell letter from Henri, who leaves her his slippers and the piano and gives her some advice on life. Finally, Constance lays flowers on his grave.

Reviews

Epd Film rated the film benevolently and particularly praised the alleged comeback of Claude Brasseur as a grumpy, grouchy pensioner. "The macho capable of insight in the films of Claude Sautet and Yves Robert has become a resilient pillar of the filmic generation contract," said Gerhard Midding in his review.

Claudia Reinhard rated the film a little less benevolently for FAZ.net : "The comedic framework of the romantic intrigue is sometimes not entirely convincing, but remains subtle enough so that the melancholy moments between the landlord and the subtenant do not lose their effect."

The film was panned in the Tagesspiegel . There Daniela Sannwald wrote: “The director Ivan Calbérac went to great lengths to be funny. He was completely unsuccessful; his characters, including Paul's father Henri, Paul's stupid wife and a friend of Constance's, are laid out in such a woodcut style that even the great Claude Brasseur in the title role cannot tear anything out.
