The Oberalsterniederung is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Henstedt-Ulzburg , Wakendorf II , Nahe and Kayhude in the Segeberg district and the Tangstedt community in the Stormarn district .

The approximately 907  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 76 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 2004 (date of regulation: July 7, 2004). The former “Schlappenmoor” nature reserve, which was designated in July 1971, has been incorporated into the nature reserve. Part of the nature reserve is also designated as an FFH area “Alster system to Itzstedter See and Nienwohlder Moor” and as an EU bird protection area “Alsterniederung”. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the Segeberg and Stormarn districts.

The nature reserve is north of Hamburg and southeast of Henstedt-Ulzburg. It places part of the approximately 2500 hectare lowland of the Upper Alster and the Rönne, a tributary of the Alster , under protection. The nature reserve extends along the Alster from its source area at Henstedt-Rhen to the federal highway 432 south of Nahe and along the Rönne from the former Elmshorn-Barmstedt-Oldesloer railway to the confluence with the Alster under protection.

The lowland was created at the end of the Vistula Glaciation from an extensive ice reservoir , in which the water of the watercourses draining eastwards on the glacier front was dammed. The ice reservoir silted up over the millennia and an extensive wetland area was created with low moors , swamp forests and swamps . In three places later raised moors , the Alsterquellmoor, the Schlappenmoor and the Wakendorfer Moor formed.

From the early Middle Ages , the valley was settled, there was a rural embossed cultural landscape , now to be largely open lowlands with grassland - and farmland , bog residues swamp forests and marginal Knicks is, run mostly close to nature by the Alster and Ronne. The lowland is sometimes flooded. The grassland areas are predominantly wet meadows with tall herbaceous meadows , marsh marigolds and small sedge meadows as well as poor hay meadows , some areas have fallen fallow or are only used extensively. In the past, the raised bogs were drained and partially peeled off and turned into grassland.

The Oberalsterniederung is a habitat for numerous animals and plants. So come here u. a. Curlew , common snipe , lapwing and kingfisher , corncrake , bittern , stonechat , whinchat and red-backed shrike . Reptiles are with adder , grass snake , forest lizard and slow worm , amphibians with peat , grass and water frog and toad and crested newt represented. Even butterflies and dragonflies are found abundantly, including meadowsweet Fritillary , Orange Tip , Landkärtchen , mirrors spot skipper and Geißkleebläuling and banded and Beautiful Demoiselle . The Upper Alster is the habitat for the small brook mussel and the brook lamprey .

The raised bog areas are now predominantly occupied by whistle grass and downy birch . Typical raised bog vegetation such as peat moss , cotton grass , bell heather and bog lily only occur in small areas. The raised bog areas that can still be renatured are to be rewetted . In the Schlappenmoor there is a wet meadow with numerous orchids .

Several paths run through the nature reserve, some of which can be used as cycling and hiking trails . Information boards are set up in several places along these paths.

The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association together with the NABU Group Norderstedt and the Tangstedt Nature Conservation Association.
