The Barker Heide is a nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein. It is located in the Segeberg district in the municipalities of Bark , Hartenholm and Todesfelde . The nature reserve borders the Segeberger Forest . This former heathland is now largely afforested. The Barker Heide is one of the few focal points of heather protection in Schleswig-Holstein and represents one of the most threatened habitats in this federal state.
41 hectares of the Barker Heide were placed under protection as early as 1938. In 2003 the nature reserve was expanded to 682 hectares. A dune landscape and treeless heather and moorland with near-natural water balance are protected. In the nature reserve there are also oak-birch forests and extensive grassland. There are also residual moor areas and sandy and wet heaths. Efforts are being made to redevelop the sand heaths that have meanwhile been completely grazed. This is done through pest and extensive grazing with sheep.
flora
The special plant species in the nature reserve include English gorse , hairy gorse , lung gentian , sundew , swamp moss , rosemary heather and bog lily .
fauna
The open grassland and heather zones of the nature reserve are used by a number of meadow birds that are on the red list in Germany. These include curlew , common snipe and lapwing . The now very rare woodlark also breeds here .
