The Wittenborn Heath is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Bark and Wittenborn in the Segeberg district .

The nature reserve is around 294  hectares in size. It is registered under number 211 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. Parts are also designated as an EU bird sanctuary "Barker and Wittenborner Heide". The area has been under protection since May 27, 2016 (date of regulation: April 19, 2016). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Segeberg district.

The nature reserve is located west of Bad Segeberg in the Segeberger Heide . It covers large parts of the former location training area Wittenborn and west adjacent surfaces with partially open, partially gehölz passed dunes , dry grass , dry Heiden , transition bogs , standing water, extensively used grassland and partially natural deciduous forest stands . The heather areas are grazed with sheep twice a year for maintenance.

The nature reserve is a habitat and a. of smooth snake and viper , dormouse , ant lion , various species of grasshoppers , butterflies and bats . The avifauna is in the area z. B. represented by eagle owl , honey buzzard , green and black woodpecker and red-backed shrimp. The area is of particular importance for the woodlark and potentially also for the goat milker , which, however, no longer occurs in the area.

In the nature reserve settle u. a. Seven stars , shadow flowers , St. John's wort and herons beak. In an empty building on the former training site, the “Wittenborn bat station” was set up as a research station as a testing facility for the design of quarters for bats. The project was recognized as a UN Decade Project in May 2016.

The area, which is managed by the Federal Forestry Agency Trave, is also important as a local recreation area and can be experienced from numerous paths. In the south it is bordered by the federal highway 206 , to the southeast it is bounded by the route corridor of the planned federal highway 20 .
