The Goldensee is a polytrophic lake within the Schaalsee biosphere reserve . The west bank is in Schleswig-Holstein . On the Mecklenburg side, the lake is only accessible in the area of the Roggendorf district of Groß Thurow . In this area there is both a jetty and a swimming area. On the lake, fishing is only possible in a clearly defined area with a valid nautical card, boat fishing is prohibited. The southwest bank of the water is forested. On the west side is the Goldensee estate, now part of Kittlitz .

Protected areas

The Goldensee has been designated as a nature reserve since May 15, 1990 . The state of the area is classified as satisfactory, as extensive nutrient inputs - including from bog drainage from adjacent areas - pollute the water quality. The nature reserve is part of the FFH area Goldensee, Mechower, Lankower and Culpiner See (MV) .

Green band

Because of its secluded location on the inner-German border, the nature reserve is now part of the so-called Green Belt . The nature reserves in the area of the Green Belt in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are (from north to south) in the Schaalsee biosphere reserve the NSG Wakenitzniederung , Kammerbruch , Campower Steilufer , Kiekbuschwiesen near Neuhof , Mechower See , Goldensee , Techin , furthermore the NSG Wallmoor , Pipermoor / Mühlbachtal , Stecknitz-Delvenau as well as the dissolved NSG Elbhang Vierwald , Elbdeichvorland , Rüterberg , inland dunes near Klein Schmölen and Löcknitztal-Altlauf in the former nature park Mecklenburgisches Elbetal , which are now all part of the biosphere reserve Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In the area of Schleswig-Holstein , the nature reserve Goldenseeufer, Heidberg and the surrounding area is directly connected to the nature reserve Goldensee .

Death of a child on the German-German border

On January 31, 1951, a ten-year-old boy who was skating on the frozen Goldensee was shot and killed by a border guard. Ice skating was officially prohibited on the lake because of the proximity of the border; however, it was tolerated by the border guards. On this day, however, a border guard was new to this section of the border who took the order to shoot seriously. The case became known again in 2013 through a book by political scientist Sandra Pingel-Schliemann.
