Location of the Oberwiesenfeld barrack barracks in Bavaria

The Barack barracks Movement Oberwiesenfeld , even Oberwiesenfeld barracks called, was an infantry - and pioneer - barracks in Munich - Schwabing at Oberwiesenfeld , originally built for the Bavarian army . The name comes from the barracks buildings built first, which were simple - " barrack-like " - construction, but two-storey and made of solid masonry.

Building and location

Former casino

The Oberwiesenfeld barracks barracks was built in the Karee between Lothstrasse (southeast), Barbarastrasse (northwest), Heßstrasse (southwest) and today's Infanteriestrasse , which runs parallel to the northeast . The first buildings were located along the two last-named streets, so that a large barracks yard was built in between. Later extensions and the military clothing office, which was no longer part of the barracks barracks, filled the karee up to Barbarastraße and Winzererstraße . An administration building with an officers' mess (built in 1907/1908 by Georg Besold ) and a guardhouse as well as a shed for heavy engineering equipment completed the barracks area beyond Infanteriestrasse to the northeast on Elisabethstrasse .

Usage history

By typhus - epidemic of 1893 in the Court Garden and the Seidenhauskaserne and its consequent abandonment of the relocation of the stationed there was Infantry Regiment body in the Türkenkaserne become necessary. In the Türkenkaserne as well as on the Campus Martius both were battalions of the 1st Infantry Regiment "King" , and the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Crown Prince" accommodated. Since a fourth - albeit only half-sized - battalion had to be set up for both regiments , the field of Mars was to be reserved for the 1st Infantry Regiment and a separate barracks should be created for the 2nd Infantry Regiment.

In August 1893 it was decided to build the new barracks, and the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 2nd Infantry Regiment were relocated here in autumn. The first and fourth battalions were able to move in from October 1895 after the property was expanded, and the third battalion was stationed in Landsberg am Lech . Since there was still space, one company each from the two engineer battalions from Ingolstadt and Germersheim was quartered; from May 1900 they were to be absorbed into the new 3rd Engineer Battalion. In 1896 the 3rd Infantry Battalion from Landsberg was able to return because the 4th Battalion of the infantry regiments had been disbanded.

In the summer of 1919, in addition to the 2nd Infantry Regiment, a number of companies from the Bavarian Army , which was being liquidated, were in the barracks - including other branches of the army . Later, the engineer battalion and the first battalion of the 19th Infantry Regiment of the Reichswehr were housed in the Oberwiesenfeld barracks. From 1935 to 1945 the barracks were called "Adolf Hitler Barracks"; Hitler had completed his basic military training here in 1914 as a soldier in Reserve Infantry Regiment 16 .

Buildings still in existence today

obelisk

The buildings of the barracks on the Oberwiesenfeld were largely spared from the bombs of World War II , but a number of them were later demolished. Some buildings are now under monument protection: Two buildings in the northwest of the former barracks are used by various Munich companies; the former riding hall for officers is now the venue; the former administration building with casino at Lothstrasse 29 / corner of Winzererstrasse serves as the headquarters of a publishing house. In addition, the administration building with the officers' mess at Elisabethstraße 79 / corner Theo-Prosel-Weg is a listed building

An obelisk erected in 1923 by Hermann Broxner at the junction between Winzererstrasse and Lothstrasse is a reminder of the 2nd Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment "Crown Prince" stationed in the barracks opposite.

Apartments formerly belonging to the pioneer department were rented to families in Munich until the beginning of 2010. The demolition of the three-story row of houses near the former casino began in April 2010.
