Location of the island of Heuwiese near Rügen |
The Heuwiese is an uninhabited German Baltic Sea island and is about two kilometers south of Ummanz and west of Rügen . It belongs to the municipality of Ummanz , the nearest place is Freesenort .
It has a maximum extension of 900 meters (northwest-southeast direction) and is about 14 hectares in size. The bird protection island, a little over 1 meter high, is located in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park .
The island is a typical salt grassland of the West Pomeranian lagoon coast and was created from dry landfall areas ( wind flats ). The resulting areas are only a few centimeters above sea level and are flooded irregularly.
The island got its name from its original use as a pasture for cattle. It has been known as a sea bird colony since the middle of the 19th century and was officially placed under protection as a breeding ground for coastal birds in 1939. In 2007 around 15 different species (including four species of seagulls and several types of ducks) brooded on the hay meadow.
A specialty are the cormorants that breed on the island and build high nests on the ground as tree breeders.
