The Balmer See is a bay in the southeast of the backwater , a lagoon-like bulge of the Peene River to the island of Usedom . The Balmer See is open to the backwaters to the east. In a south-easterly direction lies the small island of Werder , behind it the island of Böhmke in front of the Nepperminer See . The two flat islands are designated as nature and bird sanctuaries . In the north, Lake Balmer is bordered by the Cosim peninsula , which is also under nature protection. The Benz district of Balm extends on the south-western bank and is followed by a 120 hectare golf course . There are moorings for sports boats in Balm.
natural reserve
In 1967 the GDR designated the two small islands Böhmke and Werder, an area of 118 hectares, as a bird sanctuary. Around 1980 the black-headed gulls increased with up to 14,000 specimens, their droppings let the nettles proliferate, and rarer, more sensitive bird species had no chance. Only a stock regulation and a small settlement of Gotland sheep caused a change in the vegetation; the population was reduced to approx. 8000, common tern and black godwit returned. Also breed on the islands Gadwall , Tufted Duck , Pochard and mallard .
In 1996 the nature reserve peninsula Cosim (85 ha) was established, which was still used as pastureland and peat bog in GDR times; Hiking trails through salt marshes , reed beds and alder forests run through the area today. With a bit of luck, the rare bird species that breed on the two islands can be discovered on the reed banks, as well as the white stork and gray heron . Sea eagles can also be found in winter . West of the nature reserve, footpath to the former Dewichow manor (small holiday colony) and the transition to Lake Krienker .
