Rothemühl castle wall

The Rothemühl castle wall is a Slavic castle wall in the Rothemühl municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . It is located on a spur of the Brohmer Mountains directly on the L32 road. It is a three-part rampart with a small main castle and two larger outer castles . The castle wall of Rothemühl with a size of 20 hectares is the largest ever discovered Slavic castle in Germany. The outer wall is in places a double wall, which is very rare in Slavic castles. Archaeological finds indicate that there was a castle wall at the same place as early as the Bronze Age . The castle was settled in the Old Slavic period from the 7th to 9th centuries. In later times the old wall was never used again. The main function of this large castle was to offer protection to the surrounding population in times of need. However, markets, cult festivals, etc. are also likely to have been held here. In their heyday, the large tripartite Wilzen castles were something like early cities. Although the Slavs only built hilltop castles in the Old Slavic era , there are only two Slavic fortifications in the striking Brohmer Mountains. The other is the Wittenborn castle wall , which is about 10 kilometers further northwest.
