The castle wall of Wittenborn , a district of the municipality of Galenbeck in the Mecklenburg Lake District , is a Slavic castle wall . It is located on the very edge of the Brohmer Mountains , which reach a height of up to 150 m.
The great Wilzian hilltop castle is located southeast of the village, in the midst of high, wooded terrain spurs. It was only discovered in 1929 by Karl Beyer from Friedland. There is a sign to the Slavic Castle in the village, but the way there is very difficult. In summer the forest path near the castle is very overgrown, so you can quickly lose sight of it. Due to the many mountain spurs, the Slavic castle is difficult for the layman to make out. The area of the outer bailey is very uneven, has enormous height differences and is hardly noticeable. The rampart of the outer bailey runs almost straight over these hilltops. It overcomes differences in altitude of around 20 m. The higher-lying area of the main castle, on the other hand, is plateau-like. The Slavs created ramparts here only on the gate sides in the north and south. The other areas of the main castle are steeply sloping, only palisades were necessary here. The total size of the castle is about 5.5 hectares and has a maximum extension of 304 m. This makes it one of the largest Slavic ramparts . Excavations took place here in 1937 and 1973, but only few findings were found.
