The Austurvöllur is a square in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík . It is a popular gathering place for the residents of Reykjavík, partly because of the number of cafes, restaurants and bars that can be found along Vallarstræti and Pósthússtræti. It also serves as a place for protests and demonstrations, as the Icelandic parliament is also located here.

In the middle of the square is a monument to Jón Sigurðsson , who tried to get Iceland independent from Denmark . The Austurvöllur is surrounded by the streets Vallarstræti, Pósthússtræti, Kirkjustræti and Thorvaldsensstræti. Reykjavík Cathedral and the Althing are located on Austurvöllur .

In the early 18th century the square was much larger and stretched from the Aðalstræti in the west to the brook in the east and from the Aðalstræti in the north to the Tjörn in the south.
