Dómkirkja, Reykjavík

The Cathedral of Reykjavik ( isl. Dómkirkja) is adjacent to the Parliament building on Asuturvollur in the historic center of Iceland's capital and is home to the Lutheran Bishop of Iceland and church downtown community. Both the opening service of the Icelandic parliament and the celebrations after the presidential election and the appointment of bishops take place in the cathedral .

history

The previous building of the current cathedral was built between 1787 and 1796, near the site of the old church that was in Adalstræti. The bishopric had only recently been moved from Skálholt to Reykjavík and the church was to become the cathedral church of the two bishopric Hólar and Skálholt. The church was consecrated in 1796. At that time, all residents of the city still fit into the church. The church was built according to drawings by the royal builder (and well-known country house architect) Andreas Kirkerup. However, the building may have had certain weaknesses, because it was demolished and replaced by the current larger church building in 1847, which also took into account the increasing population development.
