The Kleine Keetzsee is located in the Feldberger Seenlandschaft nature park , in the Mecklenburg Lake District in southeast Mecklenburg in the Neustrelitz urban area east of the federal highway 96. It is a little subdivided channel lake through which the groundwater flows . It is 900 meters long and an approximate width of 400 meters. The lake is over ten meters deep.
The areas around the lake were used for agriculture until the 19th century. From the 1850s onwards, the Kleiner and Großer Keetzsee , which until then had no outflow, were connected to the Godendorfer See , which drains into the Havel through the watercourse of the Godendorfer Mühlenbach-Hegensteinfließ . The groundwater level subsequently fell by one meter and the higher areas could be reforested. The lakeshore is completely wooded. The area north of the lake was a restricted military area from 1930. The Big and Small Keetzsee are located in the Keetzseen nature reserve .
The lake name is derived from the Slavic word hyža for hut, which speaks for an earlier settlement on the lake shore.
