Life

Archduke Ferdinand II.

Terzio came from a noble family based in Bergamo and was the son of Cristoforo Baltreschini de Tertio. In 1551 he came to Austria to work as the court artist of Archduke Ferdinand II . In the following years Terzio moved several times between Vienna and Prague , the residences of the Habsburgs, to carry out various assignments for the imperial family. As a court artist, he went to Bergamo at least once in 1557. There Terzio signed a contract with the parents of Francesco Gozzi in order to take him with them as a student, and made a ceiling painting in the Palazzo Conte Grumelli.

In Vienna, full-body portraits of Emperor Ferdinand I , Empress Isabella and Empress Anna with daughters can be found. In 1553 Terzio created a family portrait with the later Emperor Maximilian II, which is now in Ambras Castle near Innsbruck , as well as the portraits of the four sisters of Archduke Ferdinand. In 1556 he made three paintings for the then King Ferdinand, which were intended for the palace chapel in Linz . In the years between 1560 and 1563, at the request of Emperor Ferdinand I, Terzio painted the organ in the Court Church in Prague. In 1562 he developed various designs for the Singing Fountain in the Prague Court Garden. The order for the well came again from Emperor Ferdinand I, while Archduke Ferdinand II supervised the construction. In 1564 he was dismissed as a court artist by Archduke Ferdinand at his own request.

Terzio was involved in the design of the Bohemian Bible published in Prague in 1570 with illustrations, as shown by some of his monograms on topiary. In Bergamo Terzio made two altarpieces for the Church of San Francesco, which had been ordered in 1579. After 1580 he was probably in Venice, where he worked on the decoration of the Sala dello Scrutinio in the Doge's Palace . In August 1581 Terzio completed two paintings for the presbytery of San Simpliciano in Milan.

Terzio spent the last years of his life in Rome, where he became a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Panteon (Assembly of Masters in the Pantheon ) in 1590 .
