The Great Schwerin is a peninsula in the Müritz between Röbeler Binnensee and Zahnerlank, two bays in the southwest of the lake. It belongs to the area of the municipality of Südmüritz in the Mecklenburg Lake District and is located northwest of Ludorf .

The peninsula with an area of about 87 hectares extends 1600 meters in north-south and up to 800 meters in west-east direction. It is divided into two parts by a narrow passage that is only 150 meters wide. Its highest point is only six meters above the water level of the Müritz. Originally a wooded island, regulation work on the Elde and Havel in the years 1798 to 1834 led to a water level lowering of about 1.5 meters in the Müritz, creating a land bridge. The forest was cleared and the area was used as pasture. A herd of suckler cows grazes the area nowadays in accordance with nature conservation, so that the landscape is kept open.

The peninsula is part of the Großer Schwerin with Steinhorn nature reserve , whereby the Großer Schwerin was placed under protection on July 3, 1930, which is why it is the second oldest nature reserve in what is now Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The area may only be entered from July to December on a riverside path that leads to a nature reserve, the only building on the peninsula. It is a resting place for numerous water birds such as the gray goose or the crane , but also a breeding ground for various types of ducks , such as the common snipe , the lapwing , the reed warbler and the little ringed plover . Various types of orchid bloom in the meadows, including broad-leaved orchid .

2000 cranes and 5000 gray geese live on the Großer Schwerin. In October 2016, 6,000 cranes stayed in the area, more than ever before.
