Wilhelm Tobien

Wilhelm Tobien (born January 26, 1837 in Puschdorf / East Prussia ; † September 10, 1911 in Schwelm ) was a German teacher, regional historian and author.

Life

Tobien was the son of a pastor and, according to his father's will, was to become a Protestant clergyman himself. He attended high school in Königsberg , where he also studied theology . Only after his father's death in 1857 did he turn more to philosophy and history . In order to earn a living he gave private lessons and for a short time also managed his father's former parish. In 1858 he became a tutor. He passed his first theological exam a year later. After that he began to distance himself more and more from the spiritual career before he ended this path in 1861. He continued to be a tutor and pursued philological and historical studies. He started school.

From 1863 he temporarily held the third teaching position at the community school in Lüdenscheid . A year later he passed the examination for the higher teaching post. From 1869 he was a senior teacher in Schwelm. There he was a member of the local Masonic lodge "Zum Westphalian Lion." In 1874 he participated in the establishment of an educational association and became its chairman. He also founded the Schwelmer Volksbibliothek and was its librarian until 1887. This was done from an anti-social democratic standpoint. As a founding member and first chairman of the Schwelm Local History Association from 1890, he conducted extensive research on the city's history. In the same function, he was instrumental in setting up a local history museum in Schwelm (today in Haus Martfeld ). In 1891 he became an honorary citizen of the city and a year later director of the local Progymnasium. He retired in 1904.

Tobien wrote numerous mostly historical writings on the history of Schwelm, the county of Mark and Westphalia . After the death of Johann Suibert Seibertz , he continued his regional and legal history of the Duchy of Westphalia . He also wrote some history games and statements on current events.
