Lophichthys boschmai ( Gr .: lophos = comb, ichthys = fish) is a little-known, smallmarine fish relatedto the frogfish (Antennariidae) that is endemic in the Arafura Sea and on the coast of western New Guinea . Lophichthys boschmai is a monotype in the Lophichthyidae family.
features
Like these, they show as a typical feature a "fishing rod" ( Illicium ) formed from the first hard ray of the dorsal fin with attached bait ( Esca ). Lophichthys boschmai is only 5 to 7.5 centimeters long. Its skin is loose and covered with numerous skin appendages. The skin is prickly on the head and back. The body is somewhat elongated and flattened on the sides. The mouth is large and almost vertical. There are one to two rows of small, recurved teeth in the mouth. The palatine bone is also dentate. The eyes are small and sit on the top of the head. The gill opening is small and is located behind or above the base of the pectoral fin. The base of the pectoral fin is elongated like an arm. The dorsal fin is supported by 12 to 13 soft fin rays. In front of her there are three isolated hard rays (one of which forms the "angel"). The anal fin has nine rays, the pectoral fins seven.
Way of life
Nothing is known about the way of life of Lophichthys boschmai . Like other armfinches, it probably lives in shallow waters, is rather sluggish and lurks well camouflaged for prey fish.
