The family of the large eye perch (Priacanthidae) consists of four genera and 20 species . They live in the tropical Atlantic and Indo-Pacific .
features
The fish have a tall, laterally compressed body that is often bright red in color and covered with very rough scales. The head and the steeply upward-pointing mouth are very large. Huge eyes with a light reflective layer are an adaptation to night activity. The only dorsal fin has ten hard and 11 to 15 soft rays, the anal fin has three hard and 10 to 16 soft rays, the caudal fin has 16 fin rays , 14 of which are divided. The inner fin rays of the large pelvic fins that are located far forward are connected to the body by a membrane.
The body length of most of the species remains under 30 centimeters, the largest, Cookeolus japonicus , becomes 68 centimeters long. All big eye bass feed on carnivore . Eggs, larvae and the first juvenile fish stages are pelagic , older juvenile fish and the adult animals live in rocky and coral reefs .
The fish are caught for food.
