Karl Mark (born August 1, 1900 in Vienna ; † January 24, 1991 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and member of the National Council .
biography
After attending the Academic Gymnasium and the Döblinger Gymnasium, Karl Mark studied law and political science at the University of Vienna for a few semesters and was District Secretary of the party in Döbling from 1921 until the Social Democratic Party was banned in 1934 . Mark was one of the leading representatives of the "Left in the SDAP", the party wing around the later communist Ernst Fischer . After the armed uprising by social democratic and communist workers on February 12, 1934, Mark was temporarily in police custody and interned in the Wöllersdorf detention center . According to his own statements, on April 10, 1945, he reported to the Russian commandant in Döbling to campaign for the concerns of the district. After he had given the acquaintance of the communist Ernst Fischer as a reference, the army commander named Mark Döbling district chairman . He then organized a district administration from twelve party friends, six representatives of the parishes and two liberals. However, Mark only remained district chairman of Döbling until October 1945, but held the office of district party chairman until 1970. From December 1945 Mark represented the SPÖ in the National Council (until 1966) and between 1946 and 1948 he was General Secretary of the Bund of Politically Persecuted People .
Karl Mark's daughter Susi Schneider-Mark (1943–2009) lived as an adult in New York State for decades and worked as a USA correspondent for the Arbeiter-Zeitung and from 1991 as a correspondent for the Vienna daily Der Standard . She last lived, seriously ill, with her sister in the family's country house in Saalfelden , which her grandfather had bought .
