Ferenc Farkas

Ferenc Farkas [ ˈfɛrɛnʦ ˈfɒrkɒʃ ] (born December 15, 1905 in Nagykanizsa , † October 10, 2000 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian composer.

Farkas was initially a pianist and studied at the Budapest Music Academy with Albert Sikós and Leó Weiner and then went to Rome to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia , where he became a student of Ottorino Respighi . He then worked as a composer for film studios in Vienna and Copenhagen before returning to Hungary in 1936.

From 1941 to 1944 he was a professor at the Cluj Conservatory , of which he was director. In 1949 he became a professor at the Budapest Music Academy, where he taught until his retirement in 1975. His students there included some of the most important Hungarian composers of the second half of the 20th century such as Attila Bozay , Zsolt Durkó , György Kurtág , György Ligeti , Emil Petrovics , Zoltán Jeney , Sándor Szokolay and Zsolt Gárdonyi .

Farkas composed for all chamber instruments, including rarer instruments such as the baryton and the alphorn . His work comprises a total of over 700 compositions.
