The morwong (Cheilodactylidae) or morwongs were a family harshly related fish from the subordination of the tufts Percoidei (Cirrhitioidei). They live in temperate, southern regions of the Indo-Pacific from South Australia, via New Zealand , Easter Island to the coast of South America , and in the northern Pacific between Japan and Hawaii . The genus Chirodactylus lives in the waters of southern Africa from Mozambique to Namibia . At depths of up to 250 meters, they are mostly close to the substrate. Juvenile specimens also live in the high seas, in drifting Sargasso rods or in tide pools.

features

Finger fins have an elongated, high-backed body that is higher in front and sloping evenly towards the tail. The mouth is small, provided with thick lips and terminal or slightly below . It's extendable. The teeth in the lower and upper jaw are small, slender and stand in close rows. The palate is toothless. Their scales are small to medium in size. Like their relatives, the tufted perch , they can lean on the ground with their pectoral fins, the lower four to seven rays of which are very long, thickened and free-standing. A swim bladder can be retained or regressed in adult fish. Finger fins are 20 centimeters to 1.80 meters long.

Fin formula : Dorsal XIV – XXII / 19–39, Anale III / 19–39.
