The family of miracle perches (Plesiopidae), also called round heads , belongs to the group of perch relatives and comprises eleven genera with over 50 species . All miracle perch come from the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific . The southernmost occurrence is on the coasts of Tasmania .

features

They are elongated fish with blunt rounded heads, large mouths and eyes. The different species are one to 30 cm long. Their lateral line organ is incomplete or interrupted, and their scales are large. The pelvic fins are drawn out long.

Way of life

Miracle perch are mainly crepuscular and hide in caves and crevices during the day. Only the genus Trachinops lives in open water. They predatorily live on small crustaceans and fish. They spawn in caves and do brood care. The common miracle perch ( Calloplesiops altivelis ) and two assessor species are caught for aquarium purposes and imported into wealthy countries.

Systematics

Miracle perch are closely related to the dwarf perch (Pseudochromidae), damselfish (Pomacentridae) and eel perch (Congrogadidae). There are two subfamilies, eleven genera and 50 species:

Plesiopinae

Blue Miracle Perch ( Assessor macneilli )
Common miracle perch
( Calloplesiops altivelis )
Blaupunkt miracle perch ( Paraplesiops meleagris )
Plesiops coeruleolineatus
Blaupunkt miracle perch ( Plesiopsis corallicola )

The Plesiopinae have scales on the top of the head and the gill covers.

Acanthoclininae

The Acanthoclininae, in German also called barbed perch , have scaly heads.
