Notograptus is a little-known genus of perch-related fish thatliveson the coasts of southern New Guinea and northern Australia.

features

Notograptus species are elongated and eel-like and ten to 20 centimeters long. Their dorsal , caudal and anal fins have grown together to form a continuous fin edge. The unpaired fins are mainly supported by hard rays , so the dorsal fin has 62 to 69 hard rays and only one or two soft rays. In the anal fin there are 37 to 43 hard rays for one or two soft rays. The caudal fin has eleven fin rays as well as some rudimentary ones, the pectoral fins 16 to 20. The pelvic fins sit in front of the pectoral fins, are strongly reduced and have only one thin hard ray and two soft rays. The lateral line organ runs high up along the base of the dorsal fin. The fish wear a short barb on their lower jaw . The fish have 71 to 75 vertebrae . The gill arch skeleton is reduced, the bone of the gill cover is deeply incised.

Systematics

The ichthyologist Joseph S. Nelson places the genus in a monotypical family Notograptidae in his standard work Fishes of the World . Fishbase counts them to the barbed perch ( Acanthoclininae) of a subfamily of the miracle perch (Plesiopidae).
