Worldwide distribution of the Sillaginidae

The Sillaginidae are slender schooling fish from the group of perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). They live in the western Indo-Pacific from South Africa to Japan and Australia in shallow water on the coasts in the sea and brackish water . The juvenile fish of some species also penetrate the fresh water of the estuaries. In Australia they are called "whitings". The name is used in other English-speaking countries for whiting , to which they are not related.

The Sillaginidae have an elongated body and a small mouth with few teeth. They have two dorsal fins , the first has 10 to 13 hard rays , the second one hard and 16 to 27 soft rays.
