The flag - or flag tails ( Kuhlia ) are a genus of perch related fish. One species lives in the eastern Atlantic , all others in the Indo-Pacific . The genus and family were named after the German zoologist Heinrich Kuhl (1797–1821).
features
Flag tails usually have a silver-colored, laterally flattened body. Only the tail is drawn with a striped pattern. The fish are 11 to 45 centimeters long. Its mouth can be turned forward (protractile). The jaw and palate are covered with fine teeth. Your dorsal fin has a deep indentation in the middle, in front of the soft-radiating part. It is supported by ten strong hard rays and 9 to 12 soft rays. The anal fin has three hard and 9 to 13 soft rays. Both can be put back in sheaths. There are two spines on the gill cover . The number of vertebrae is 25.
Way of life
The schooling fish often stay in mangroves or in the tidal area . Young fish often remain in small residual water at low tide . Many species also live in estuaries and brackish water and Kuhlia rupestris is a pure freshwater inhabitant. Flag tails eat at night and feed primarily on small pelagic crustaceans.
