The cow perch ( Lactarius lactarius ) ( Latin , lactarius = milky) is a perch-related marine fish that is widespread in the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to Southeast Asia , Japan , Queensland and Fiji . It lives close to the coast to a depth of 100 meters.

It becomes a maximum of 40, but mostly only 30 centimeters long. With a length of 16.8 to 19.2 centimeters, it becomes sexually mature . Its body color is silver-gray, the belly is silvery white, the dorsal fins shimmer blue, the other fins are pale yellow. On the upper part of the gill cover it has a washed out dark spot.

The cow perch has two dorsal fins, the first is supported by eight to nine hard rays, the second by 20 to 22 soft rays. The anal fin has three spines and 25 to 28 soft rays. The soft-rayed dorsal fin and the soft-rayed part of the anal fin are covered with slightly sloping scales that are regularly replaced. The cow perch has 24 vertebrae. Its slanted mouth is large. The fish has two small fangs at the tip of the upper and lower jaw. It feeds on living things that live in the ground and dig in the ground.
