The False scorpionfish ( Centrogenys vaigiensis , Greek . Kentron = thorn, genos = race) is the only species of the genus Centrogenys , in turn, the only family Centrogenyidae is. The fish is found in the Indo-Pacific from the Nicobar Islands north to the Ryūkyū Islands and south to the coast of northern Australia in shallow, coastal regions of the sea in rocky reefs and on scree and in brackish water .
features
The false scorpion fish grows to 10 inches long. It is similar in shape, fin shape and color to the tufted perch and the scorpion fish , but is placed in its own family of perch relatives . Originally he was even described as a member of the genus Scorpaena . However, it lacks the typical scorpion fish bone braces over the cheekbones and the poisonous fin spines.
The predatory fish is diurnal and feeds on smaller fish, shrimp and crabs.
Systematics
It is uncertain which order the family Centrogenyidae belongs to within the perch relatives . According to Near and co-workers, it is the sister group of the sand eels (Ammodytidae) and sand perches (Pinguipedidae) and is therefore in a clade, the R. Betancur-R. et al. have assigned the ordinal name Uranoscopiformes . The probability of a monophyletic clade Uranoscopiformes including the Centrogenyidae is with Betancur-R., Calculated according to the bootstrap method , but only at 41%.
