Jean d'Estrées (* 1666 in Paris ; † March 3, 1718 ) was a French cleric and diplomat.

D'Estrées came from the influential French noble family of the Estrées and was the son of the Marshal of France Jean II. D'Estrées . He was also the nephew of César d'Estrées , Cardinal Bishop of Albano ; his older brother was Victor-Marie d'Estrées , a later peer of France .

At the age of 27, d'Estrées negotiated in 1692 at the Portuguese court in Lisbon with Peter II about his neutrality in the Palatinate War of Succession . When he had successfully completed this diplomatic mission, he returned to Paris, where he was named “Dr. theol. " PhD .

1703 Estrées was with another important mission at the Spanish court in Madrid with King Philip V entrusted. He initially worked there with his uncle César, whom he then replaced as envoy.

In 1711 d'Estrées was elected by the Académie française to succeed the late Nicolas Boileau (Fauteuil 1). After his death, statesman Marc René d'Argenson took his place.

In 1716 he was made Archbishop of Cambrai , but died in 1718 without receiving episcopal ordination.

Trivia

The painter Hyacinthe Rigaud depicted d'Estrées in a very successful portrait. This picture achieved great fame a. a. through the engravings by Jean Audran , Laurent Cars and Étienne Desrochers .
