Victor-Marie, Duke of Estrées

Victor Marie Estrées, Duke of Estrées (born November 30, 1660 in Paris ; † December 27, 1737 ibid) was a French military and statesman, vice admiral, marshal and peer of France .

Life

Victor-Marie came from the influential French noble family of the Estrées . He was the son of Marshal Jean Estrées, Count of Estrées (1624–1707) and the grandson of Marshal François Annibal d'Estrées, Duke of Estrées (around 1573–1670). He was married to Lucie Félicité de Noailles , daughter of Marshal of France Anne Jules de Noailles, Duke of Noailles .

As a ship captain, he took part in his father's expeditions to America, Tripoli and Algiers . In 1690 he was one of the squadron commanders in the Battle of Beachy Head . In March 1691, he commanded the galleys that took Villafranca , Nice and Oneglia , and in 1697 bombed Barcelona and Alicante . Raised Marshal of France and Spanish Grand in 1703, he made a major contribution to the naval victory in the Battle of Vélez-Málaga (1704), and after the death of his father became Governor of Nantes and Coucy and Viceroy of America.

In 1715 he was appointed President of the Naval Council and Vice-President of the Trade Council, in 1717 introduced to the Regency Council and in 1720 entrusted with the governorate of Brittany . He later became a duke, was admitted to the Council of State in 1733 and received the honors of a first Marshal of France in 1734. Estrées was a member of several academies. In 1707 he became an honorary member of the Académie des sciences . He died in Paris on December 27, 1737.
