The deep-sea herring (Bathyclupeidae) are, despite their name, a family of perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). The fish live in the Atlantic , Indian Ocean , western Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico . The specimens caught so far come from depths of 340 to 778 meters.

features

Deep-sea herring grow to be about eight inches long. They are silver-gray, have an almost straight back line, large eyes and an almost vertical crevice. They have a long anal fin with a single fin spine and 31 vertebrae . The dorsal fin sits on the back of the body. Both unpaired fins are covered with scales.

Fin formula : dorsal I / 8–10, anal I / 24–39, pectoral 26–30.
