The snooks ( Centropomus ) are a genus of fish from the order Carangiformes .

Occurrence

Of the 13 species of snooks, seven live in the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic from North Carolina to Porto Alegre and six more in the eastern Pacific from Baja California to Peru and the Galapagos Islands . They occur in the coastal sea and in brackish water , some species also in fresh water in river underflows.

features

Snooks are predatory fish that are 36 centimeters to 1.40 meters long and whose perch- like, elongated appearance is reminiscent of the European pikeperch . The indented (concave) forehead is striking. The lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The lateral line organ extends down to the deeply forked caudal fin and reaches the middle of the caudal fin end. Snooks have 24 vertebrae and seven Branchiostegal rays .

Fin formula : dorsal 1 VIII, dorsal 2 I / 8–11, anals III / 5–8, ventral I / 5.
