description

Main way

View from 1800 meters down to the Way of St. James in Klostertal
The historic Rapperswil-Hurden wooden footbridge, rebuilt in 2001

The pilgrim route leads through the Tyrolean Stanzer Valley over the Arlberg through the Vorarlberg Klostertal and the Walgau to Rankweil , crosses the border to Switzerland between Meiningen and Oberriet and arrives via Appenzell , Urnäsch to Sankt Peterzell , where the path leads to the Via Jacobi Konstanz / Rorschach - Einsiedeln , the so-called Schwabenweg , flows into it. Both branches then lead through Rapperswil and on the wooden pilgrim footbridge there over Lake Zurich , on the south bank steeply up to the Etzelpass and over to Einsiedeln.

variant

A variant of the pilgrimage route leads from Satteins via Feldkirch , the Schellenberg and the Principality of Liechtenstein to Gams and Wildhaus , where the route joins the Appenzeller Weg after crossing the Thur Valley in Toggenburg near Wattwil .

The trails run on existing hiking trails, are partly identical to historical traffic and mule trails and are attractive for both spiritual and sporty hikers.

Project

With the transnational LEADER + project, which was completed in 2008 and in which the regional development of Vorarlberg played a leading role on the Austrian side from the beginning, the already existing St. James' Ways in Austria and Switzerland, starting from West Tyrol via Vorarlberg and the Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen , became one continuous Path connection equipped as part of the Camino de Santiago network . The tourist regions in Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Switzerland as well as experts from hiking trail planning in these regions were also involved in the implementation of the project.
