description

Krumau in the Czech Republic was chosen as the starting point for the continuation of the Way of St. James coming from Poland ( Warsaw , Cracow ), which belonged to the pastoral care area of the Schlägl monastery and is also the largest neighboring town of the monastery.

The route leads via Maria Gojau ( Kájov ), one of the oldest Marian pilgrimage sites in Bohemia, via Novosedly (district of Gojau) and Lagau (Slavkov, a place in the Bohdalovice municipality ) to the St. Jacob's Church in Světlík and on to Friedberg ( Frymburk nad Vltavou) ) on the banks of the Vltava reservoir . The lake is crossed with the help of a ferry.

The pilgrimage route runs through the Šumava National Park , first along the lake to the Church of St James and Philip in Vorder Heuraffl ( Přední Výtoň ) and then on to St. Thomas ( Svatý Tomáš ) to the Wittinghausen Vítkův hrádek castle ruins , which are known from the stories of Adalbert Stifter , and further via Koranda to the border crossing at Sankt Oswald bei Haslach .

In Sankt Oswald, a steep stepped path leads to the Furtmühle and on the Große Mühl hiking trail to Schlägl Abbey . From there, the Jakobsweg uses the Schlägler Rundweg to the pilgrimage church of Sankt Wolfgang am Stein , from where it goes via Katzing to Kollonödt on the Kirchsteig to Maria Trost in Berg bei Rohrbach , before reaching the Jakobskirche in the district capital Rohrbach on the Kapellenweg . In Rohrbach there is a Loretto Chapel with a Black Madonna .

The Way of St. James runs on the Götzendorfersteig to Götzendorf and follows the markings on the Brezen-Jausenweg past the Brezerhaus to Sarleinsbach and on the Danube- Ameisberg circular route via Altendorf and Ohnhäusl as well as Ellmannsberg and Wulln to Maria Bründl to Putzleinsdorf .

As far as Pfarrkirchen im Mühlkreis , the Jakobsweg follows the pilgrimage route via Mannersdorf and Spielleiten, leads on the Lugabauernweg to Altenhof Castle and on the Bishop Firmian -Weg to Neustift im Mühlkreis , where it is on the Schmugglersteig over the border to Gottsdorf (Gothic Jakobskirche with baroque furnishings) goes.

In Bavaria, Ramesberg, Stollberg, Bad Lämmersdorf, Diendorf, Untergriesbach, Zipf, Rampersdorf, Schaibing , Aubachtal, Aubachmühle and Schmölz follow in the market town of Untergriesbach .

The next community on the pilgrimage is Thyrnau with Schmölz in the Erlautal, past the Martinskapelle to Zwölfing, Mitteröd, Hundsdorf to Thyrnau with the Christopheruskirche, the parish church Franz Xaver, the Loretto chapel and the monastery of the Cistercian abbey Sankt Josef, before it goes on to Weihermühl .

In Thyrnau, the Jakobsweg has connections to the Donausteig , the Goldsteig and the E8 long-distance hiking trail .

Project

The trail was developed based on an idea by Maximilian Bogner under the leadership of Abbot Martin Felhofer from Schlägl Abbey in cooperation with the Bohemian Forest holiday region and with the support of the Province of Upper Austria and opened in 2005.

The basis of route planning for the Way of St. James through the Upper Mühlviertel was, among other things, a medieval pilgrimage from Kájov ( Gojau ) in the Krumau region to Sankt Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut on the Abersee , the importance of Passau as the capital of the Bohemian-Mühlviertel region, old trade routes to Salzburg and beyond Passau and Altötting and important places along the way, for example the Gothic parish church of Sankt Oswald in Aigen im Mühlkreis , the Schlägl monastery, the town of Rohrbach at the intersection of Via Regia and goldener Steig with the Jakobskirche and the Sarleinsbach market with the church of Sankt Peter.
