history

Altenhof Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1204. The owner at that time was Wernhardus de Altinhoven . Altenhofen belonged like the Falkenstein Castle to the basic rule of the Falkensteiner, a powerful rule gender, of the development of the area north in the 13th century Danube operation. Falkenberg is believed to have passed to the Witigonen through marriage and passed to the sovereign prince in 1289 through Duke Albrecht I of Austria . After the Habsburgs took ownership, Altenhofen was administered, pledged or given as a fief by burgraves . 1303 Leopold von Jedberg is named as a burgrave.

At the beginning of the 15th century Altenhofen came to the Jagenreuter as a fief . In 1452 the brothers Balthasar, Siegmund and Erasmustagreuter sold a third of the property to the Melabrunners . The last of this family was Dankwart Melabrunner († 1475, buried in the church of Pfarrkirchen ). From 1485 to 1602 the Hörleinsperger were fief owners. After Ulrich (IV.) Herleinsperger's death, it came into the possession of the Counts of Salburg in 1602, who united it with Falkenstein and also rebuilt it.

In 1682 the castle burned down completely and was rebuilt in its present form by Count Johann Reichard von Salburg. A chapel was also built in 1708 in honor of St. Mary was consecrated. In 1724 the castle and chapel were destroyed again by fire, but were rebuilt afterwards. The baroque castle church is considered the largest private castle church in Austria and is richly decorated with stucco inside. The castle chapel is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Joseph and the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel .

Until 1958 the castle was used as a retirement home for the Rohrbach district.
