The Mosfellsheiði is a plateau in the southwest of Iceland .

It is located a little northeast of the capital Reykjavík , between it and the area of Þingvellir , more precisely between the mountain ranges of the Skálafell on the one hand, an extension of Reykjavík's local mountain range , Esja , and that of the Hengill on the other. The road No. 36, called Þingvallavegur , from Mosfellsbær to Þingvallavatn leads over this plateau, which at its highest point at the remains of the Borgarhólar crater reaches 410 m.

On the Mosfellsheiði there are several smaller lakes such as the Leirvogsvatn and the Mjóavatn , where you can fish for trout.

A slope-like access road to the Skálafell ski area branches off near Leirvogsvatn . There is also a ski lift there. On the Skálafell mountain itself there is a weather station and television and other transmitters. In the Reykjavík area, however, it is also known for its stormy weather with north winds.

Gljúfrasteinn, the house of Halldór Laxness

If you drive up the Heiði from Mosfellsbær, you will pass the Gljúfrasteinn house , where the poet and Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness lived until his death. The strikingly white house is now a literature center and museum.
