The Skálafell is a volcanic mountain in the southwest of Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Kjósarhreppur and Reykjavíkurborg on Þverárdalur.

location

The mountain joins the Esja massif in the east not far from Reykjavík and is located approx. 20 km east of Mosfellsbær . Between the Móskarðshnjúkar and the Skálafell there is the Svínaskarð pass , over which the main connection between Reykjavík and the Hvalfjörður used to run.

geology

Skálafell is around 1.8 million years old and part of the extinct and eroded Stardalur volcano , a former central volcano .

Transmitter on the summit

On the summit of the Skálafell there are transmission systems for radio and television as well as for cell phone reception. A weather station regularly sends data to the Meteorological Office in Reykjavík, the storm fronts on the mountain are notorious.

Sport on the Skálafell

To ski

On the Skálafell is one of the two ski areas near the capital Reykjavík. There is a ski hut below the Skálafell, a chair lift leads up the mountain and, if there is enough snow, trails are groomed.

The other ski area near Reykjavík is located in the Bláfjöll mountain range .

hike

You can easily climb the mountain from the southeast side by following the jeep track.
