Úlfarsfell |
The Úlfarsfell palagonite ridge is located between Reykjavíkurborg and Mosfellsbær in southwest Iceland and northwest of Hafravatn across from Korpúlfsstaðir and is 295 m high. The farm of the same name is located southeast of the mountain.
geology
The Úlfarsfell rock dates from the middle of the Ice Age . At that time there were two active volcanic systems in the vicinity of Reykjavík's neighboring mountain, Esja , the system of the Stardals volcano , which was roughly at the height of Kjós (Hvalfjörður) , and that of the Kollafjörður volcano . Both were active about 3 and 2 million years ago, respectively. The Ice Age lasted in Iceland from about 3 million years ago to 10,000 years ago. The mountain was formed around 1.5–2 million years ago, so the magma that built it came from one of these central volcanoes.
Recreation area
The mountain is part of the Reykjavík recreational area . Several hiking trails lead up to it, especially from the north below the Hamrahlíð rock belt , where the Icelandic forest administration has planted trees, and from the west along the road to Hafravatn . From the two peaks of the mountain you have a good view of Reykjavík and Faxaflói Bay .
Building areas and roads
The ring road in the direction of Borgarnes runs right past its foot in the north. There is now a new development area with industrial settlements in the direction of Reykjavík.
