Reykjavík with Faxaflói |
Faxaflói ([ ˈfaxsaˌflouɪ ]) is a wide sweeping bay between the Reykjanes and Snæfellsnes peninsulas in southwest Iceland . Literally translated, the name means "Faxis Bay" after an old Icelandic legend.
Faxaflói is the largest bay in Iceland and on its shores is Reykjavík , the capital of Iceland. On a clear day you can look far beyond it, past the Akranes peninsula and across to Snæfellsjökull , which is 120 km away. The southeastern arm of Faxaflóis is the fjord Kollafjörður , in which the island Viðey lies. Faxaflói has long been an important fishing area and has been popular for year-round whale watching for several years .
