history

The uninhabited island belonged to Víkurkirkja , a former church in Reykjavík, in 1379 and was used for growing grain. The Icelandic bailiff Skúli Magnússon lost a legal battle over possession of the island, which he fought with a farmer on behalf of the church. In 1854 a landmark was erected on the island . In 1969 the municipality of Reykjavík bought the island and from 1978 it was part of the municipality.
