Grótta is a small uninhabited island near Reykjavík in Iceland .
It lies in front of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula , with which it was connected until the storm surge Básendaflóðið in 1788. Today it can be reached via the Gróttugrandi dam at low tide . The island has been a nature reserve since 1974 because of bird life and is not allowed to be entered between May 1st and July 1st. The first lighthouse was built on the island in 1897 . The current lighthouse dates from 1947.
