Loimaa [ ˈlɔi̯mɑː ] is a city in southwestern Finland . It is located in the Varsinais-Suomi landscape 66 kilometers northeast of Turku .

In addition to the actual core city, the urban area includes a wide rural area with an area of 852 square kilometers. By Loimaa the river flows Loimijoki , a tributary of the Kokemäenjoki . Neighboring communities are Koski Tl in the south, Pöytyä and Oripää in the southwest, Säkylä and Huittinen in the northwest, Punkalaidun in the north and Humppila and Ypäjä in the east.

The parish of Loimaa was first mentioned in a document in 1439, but it should have existed since the 14th century. Historically , Loimaa was part of the Satakunta landscape . Until the 19th century, agriculture was practically the only occupation in the Loimaa area. When the railway line from Turku to Toijala was completed in 1876 , Loimaa received its own train station. Today's center developed around the train station. In 1921 the place Loimaa was detached as an independent market town ( kauppala ) from the surrounding municipality Loimaa , it received town charter in 1969. In 2005 the municipality Loimaa, which in turn had been connected to the municipality Metsämaa in 1976 , was incorporated again into the city Loimaa. At the beginning of 2009, the neighboring communities of Alastaro and Mellilä were incorporated .

The church of Loimaa was built from brick in 1831–37 according to plans by Charles Bassi and Carl Ludwig Engel . After a fire severely damaged it, it was repaired in 1890–91 under Josef Stenbäck . It received its present shape with a church tower in the Baroque style and a large dome. The wooden church of Alastaro has a very eventful history: It was originally built in Loimaa in 1754. When the current church was built in Loimaa, the Alastaro chapel community acquired the old church in 1837. It was dismantled and rebuilt in its current location in 1840–41. The church got its present form in 1896–97 when it was restored and rebuilt under the aegis of Josef Stenbäck. Other churches are located in Metsämaa (1777) and Virttaa (1845). The Alastaro Circuit is located in the urban area of Loimaa .
