Constituencies of Iceland

Since 2003 there are six constituencies in Iceland ( Icelandic kjördæmi ).

This division of Iceland is intended to ensure that approximately the same number of votes is required for every parliamentarian. Iceland had eight constituencies between 1959 and 2003 and 32 constituencies from 1844 to 1959.

After the redistribution of the electoral districts in 2003, 11 members were initially elected in each constituency. Due to population changes, the constituency Southwest has gained MPs over time, while the rural constituencies Northeast, Northwest and South have lost some accordingly.
