The municipality of Helgafellssveit is located in western Iceland in the Vesturland region on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula .
On January 1, 2019, the place had 62 inhabitants. The church is Helgafell.
In the west of the municipality, on the way from Grundarfjörður to Stykkishólmur , you cross an extensive lava field, the Berserkjahraun . In places it is so warm that the snow does not stay there in winter. The lava field takes its name from a saga according to which two berserkers (slaves) were slain here, one of whom fell in love with his master's daughter.
The way to Stykkishólmur leads past the 73 m high mountain Helgafell . The legend tells that whoever climbs this mountain for the first time (in silence) has three wishes.
