history

Hvalfjarðarsveit was created on June 1, 2006 through the merger of the rural communities Hvalfjarðarströnd ( Hvalfjarðarstrandarhreppur ), Skilmannahreppur, Innri-Akranes ( Innri-Akraneshreppur ) and Leirá og Melar ( Leirár- og Melahreppur ). When choosing the new municipality name, Hvalfjarðarsveit prevailed over the suggested names Hvalfjarðarbyggð, Heiðarsveit, Heiðarbyggð and Hafnarbyggð.
