The municipality of Hvalfjarðarsveit is located in western Iceland in the Vesturland region . On January 1, 2019, the community had 638 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality lies between the Hvalfjörður and the Borgarfjörður . It rises in Skarðsheiði to 1,041 meters.
Akranes is southwest of Hvalfjarðarsveit , Borgarbyggð and Skorradalur in the north , Bláskógabyggð in the east and Kjós in the south .
To the west of the municipality, northeast of Akrafjall , lies Eiðisvatn lake east of the settlement of Melahverfi . The river Laxá flows from the lake into Hvalfjörður . Southeast of the Skarðsheiði mountain are the three lakes Eyrarvatn , Glammastaðavatn and Geitabergsvatn . Lake Hvalvatn is located in the far east of the municipality, east of the Hvalfell tabular volcano and north of Botnssúlur . From this lake the Botnsá river flows into Hvalfjörður, where it plunges down the almost 200 m high Glymur waterfall . This is the second highest waterfall in Iceland .
history
Hvalfjarðarsveit was created on June 1, 2006 through the merger of the rural communities Hvalfjarðarströnd ( Hvalfjarðarstrandarhreppur ), Skilmannahreppur, Innri-Akranes ( Innri-Akraneshreppur ) and Leirá og Melar ( Leirár- og Melahreppur ). When choosing the new municipality name, Hvalfjarðarsveit prevailed over the suggested names Hvalfjarðarbyggð, Heiðarsveit, Heiðarbyggð and Hafnarbyggð.

The former rural community of Hvalfjarðarströnd had 147 inhabitants (2005). The municipality was north of Hvalfjörður and rises in Skarðsheiði to 1,041 meters. The place of the church was Saurbær.
The former rural community Skilmannahreppur had 214 inhabitants (2005). The parish was on the north side of the Akranes Peninsula. Located in the immediate catchment area of the city of Akranes , the municipality of Skilmannahreppur recorded a population growth of 71% from 1997 to 2005.
The former rural community of Innri-Akranes (Isl. Innri-Akraneshreppur ) had 113 inhabitants (2005). The parish was on the south side of the Akranes Peninsula. The church place is Innrihólmur.
The former rural community Leirá og Melar (Isl. Leirár- og Melahreppur ) had 129 inhabitants (2005). The municipality was on the south side of Borgarfjörður . The place of the church was Leirá.

The main roads are the Hringvegur in the west of the municipality and the Hvalfjarðarvegur , which leads around the Hvalfjörður. The community is connected to Mosfellsbær and Reykjavík via the long Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel that runs below Hvalfjörður .
