Botnssúlur from Botnsdalur |
The Botnssúlur (1095 m) is an eroded and extinct tabular volcano in the west of Iceland . The mountain is located in the municipality triangle of Hvalfjarðarsveit , Kjós and Bláskógabyggð .
location
The mountain rises not far from the Hvalfjörður fjord . It is located just a few kilometers southeast of the Hvalfell tabular volcano and the Glymur waterfall and about 20 km north of Þingvellir .
description
Basically, it is a mountain range that consists of different, interconnected peaks of an eroded volcano.
The peaks are called Vestursúla (1086 m), Syðstasúla (1093 m), Miðsúla and Súlnaberg (954 m), and there is also an unnamed peak.
Volcanism
The volcano was active in the Ice Age , more precisely about 3–4 cold ages ago . After that, valley glaciers and other Ice Age glaciers eroded it so that only small parts of the basalt cover can be seen. As is usually the case with this type of mountain, the lower remaining parts are made of palagonite .
Hiking and mountaineering
Popular hikes at the foot of the mountain range lead, for example, on an old connecting path , the Leggjabrjótur to Þingvellir or from the Botnsdalur to the Glymur waterfall.
Of the five peaks, the southernmost is usually climbed: Syðstasúla.
