The Hvalfjarðarvegur is a main street in the capital region and in the west of Iceland .
Until 1998 it was a 61 km long section of the ring road around Hvalfjörður north of Reykjavík . Then it was abbreviated and replaced by the Hvalfjarðargöng . Now there is little traffic on this street. It was not until 1990 that the entire road could be paved. The single-lane bridge over the Botnsá was particularly prone to accidents. The river plunges inland over the Glymur , which has long been considered Iceland's highest waterfall.
