Fjallabyggð [ ˈfjatlapɪɣð ] is an Icelandic municipality in the Norðurland eystra region . On January 1, 2019, it had 2007 residents.
geography
The municipality is located on the Tröllaskagi peninsula , west of Eyjafjörður . The north of the municipality is characterized by the three fjords Siglufjörður , Héðinsfjörður and Ólafsfjörður .
The town of the same name is located on Siglufjörður . South of Héðinsfjörður is the lake Héðinsfjardarvatn , on Ólafsfjörður there is the town of the same name and the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn .
Sveitarfélagið Skagafjörður is southwest of Fjallabyggð , and Dalvíkurbyggð is southeast .
history
The municipality was formed in June 2006 through the amalgamation of the municipalities Siglufjörður (Isl. Siglufjarðarkaupstaður ) and Ólafsfjörður (Isl. Ólafsfjarðarbær ). The alternative name suggestions Hnjúkabyggð, Tröllaskagabyggð and Ægisbyggð could not prevail among the electorate.
From 2006 to 2010 the Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnel was built between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður .
Ólafsfjörður
Ólafsfjörður is a trading town on the fjord of the same name, a western branch of the Eyjafjörður . On January 1, 2019, it had 787 inhabitants. Since 1991 the Múlagöng - a 3.4 km long tunnel - leads south into the Eyjafjörður. The distance to Reykjavík is 414 kilometers by road.
Siglufjörður
Siglufjörður (Eng. "Ship mast fjord") is a trading town. In the time of the herring boom , Siglufjörður had over 3,000 inhabitants, on January 1, 2019 there were still 1,184 inhabitants. The herring fishing museum and a herring festival testify to the heyday. Until the construction of the first longer tunnel in Iceland - the Strákagöng - the place was difficult to reach by land. The distance to Reykjavík is 401 kilometers by road. With the formation of Fjallabyggð Siglufjörður moved from the region Norðurland vestra to the region Norðurland eystra .
